I have been trying to join this “cool group” for weeks and finally broke through the door after knocking incessantly without reply. It is hip, it is niche and it is really really hard to get access! Clubhouse seems like the perfect name for it!
It is a social media platform driven by voice rather than text. People get to speak and we all get to listen. Created by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth the app is already claimed to be worth more than $100 million.
Oprah, Chris Rock, Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Hart, Jared Leto, Mark Cuban, Van Jones, MC Hammer are just some of the famous people who are participating or listening in on some hot topics ranging from cryptocurrency, to music, current events and new trends. When the conversation ends it all disappears, just like real conversations and in person chats with live audio.
How does Clubhouse work?
Clubhouse room participants enter a room and can immediately listen to a chosen number of people who are discussing a topic of interest. These members are “on stage,” and at the moment you are a member of the “audience” listening in. There is a key Moderator, who aims to keep the conversations on track and they can also invite others to join the discussion. It sounds and feels like a large conference call, where everyone takes turns speaking. Until you are ready to contribute, you standby and listen, just as you might in any large conference call.
It’s like listening to a live podcast! Only cooler!
How to get access to Clubhouse?
Good question. The Clubhouse app is invite only and each new participant only gets one invite to bring a new friend, until you are more active and gain additional opportunities. I got in through a friend of a friend, who knew a friend…… Phew…. instant cool factor! Most people log on and get placed in a waiting list hoping for a contact to recognise them and invite them in. The app claims to me intentionally growing slowly while it weeds out the bugs and creates new policies that match the platform’s needs.
It is Apple only at this stage so you can only download from the App store.
Why am I interested in Clubhouse?
My industry and our company is involved in setting up and managing international schools on behalf of investors and developers. It is a niche industry that many people find fascinating but very little genuine knowledge is out there. Our company, new project leads and new opportunities tend to come from enquiries about “how to set up a school” or “how to improve an existing school.” Our team are experts in international education and enjoy networking with other educators as well as investors around this topic. Spontaneous, real time conversations are authentic and most often engaging when we discuss projects in many different countries as well as the future of international education. I really prefer to explore these topics in person, over a zoom call, whatsapp or of course in person. Through direct dialogue the topics are much more easily unpacked.
When people are looking for information on a topic they normally scour the internet for hours hoping to learn what they can from an article that has been published or a forum where someone has written their own take on the areas you are interested in. Within Clubhouse you can listen directly or ask questions of an expert in the field. More importantly, it is a platform that allows the very well educated and knowledge experts a chance to share with anyone and everyone. Want to learn about Cryptocurrency? Listen and ask questions of an actual coin founder or blockchain pioneer. Trying to break into a new career? Speak to CEOs, middle managers and leaders with decades of experience.
To be honest I am really excited about it. I can participate in, as well as lead, genuine and authentic conversations about topics I am passionate about. It makes social media more connected and relevant.
