In the mid-1980s, NASA sought innovative ways to inspire children’s interest in space exploration. One such idea involved inviting Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer behind the beloved Sesame Street character Big Bird, to join a space shuttle mission. The plan was for Spinney to don the eight-foot-two-inch Big Bird costume aboard the shuttle, creating educational segments from orbit. However, logistical challenges, primarily the costume’s size, rendered the idea impractical. Consequently, the initiative was shelved, and NASA shifted focus to the Teacher in Space Project, selecting educator Christa McAuliffe for the mission.
Tragically, on January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members, including McAuliffe. Had the original plan proceeded, Spinney would have been aboard, and countless children might have witnessed the loss of a cherished character live on television.
Reflecting on the proposal, Spinney recalled receiving a letter from NASA inviting him to join a mission to orbit Earth as Big Bird to encourage children’s interest in space. He noted that the puppet’s size ultimately led to the plan’s cancellation, with a teacher taking his place.
This near miss on this strategy underscores the profound impact that unforeseen circumstances can have on well-intentioned initiatives. While the goal was to inspire and educate, the potential consequences would have been incredible.
